The beginning ten minutes or so of Get Smart are sort of unsatisfying, and I thought “here we go, another trailer that causes the dvd seem stronger than it is”. But it betters greatly after that point, primarily after the initial meeting of Max with Agent 99.
Anne Hathaway is in many ways the life of this picture: she is incredibly pretty and totally believable in all her action scenes.
Although Steve Carell may be a bit reminiscent of Leslie Neilson (The Naked Gun) from time to time, he was able to make a honest spin on his character making him appealing and believable.
The relationship Max and 99 have formed at the finish of the picture seems to be based more on a friendly relationship than anything else. I would state the cast was well picked, including Dalip Singh (WWF wrestler) who portrays a massive ol’ henchman, most likely resembling Jaws from the 007 series.
There are some good laughs in Get Smart, but what pleasantly astonished me is how well-done the action is. From an exciting freefall sequence that was in all probability designed as a tribute to the opening of Moonraker to Carell’s and Hathaway’s rapid, effective fight scenes (choreographed by a veteran at this sort of matter, James Lew), and from the explosions at the bakeshop factory to the incredibly energizing closing pursuit sequence involving various means of transportation, the action in this picture in all likelihood outperforms the recent James Bond dvd videos, assisted by the fact that a lot of it looks to have been done by the actors themselves, willing to take great risks. So individuals who are more into action than into comedy should still get some satisfaction out of this.
You really have a tailored Bond style plot. You have the good guys who are after the bad guys for causing negative things…such as killing the President.
At first Max isn’t allowed to work as a field agent, though he passed his test to become one. But once the bad boys discover the identities of other field agents and begin eliminating them, Max, along with 99 and 23 (The Rock) are delighted to go and kick some butt.
In honesty I didn’t think the motion picture would be as serious as it ended up. Carell has great comedic timing, but adding some very cool Bond Q-gadgets and a cluster of action, it really does feel like a good action film. Also, the interpersonal chemistry with Hathaway and Carell was a ideal couple.
I loved this picture due to some of the preceding items, from the wonderful characters to the very fine looking eye candy that is Hathaway. Get Smart works merely because it sets its own thing unlike many of the comedies released in the last couple of years such as disaster picture, date dvd movies, Meet the Spartans and many more humorless movies.
